Parys is graced by the serene and picturesque Vaal River, making it a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The river offers a myriad of activities, from tranquil boat rides and fishing to more adventurous pursuits like kayaking and river rafting. The lush riverbanks provide perfect spots for picnics, leisurely strolls, and bird watching. The Vaal River’s beauty and serenity are truly captivating, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat.
Parys is a resort town situated on the southern bank of the Vaal River in the northern Free State province of South Africa. The name “Parys” is the Afrikaans translation of Paris, attributed to German surveyor Schilbach, who saw a resemblance between the Vaal River and the Seine River in Paris.
The town was officially established in 1876 when the Van Coller brothers, owners of the Klipspruit farm, laid out the township. Initially reluctant, they were eventually persuaded by the Dutch Reformed Church and set aside a portion of land for the church. The first sale of plots took place on June 14, 1876, marking the beginning of Parys.
The completion of the railway sideline to Parys in 1905 significantly boosted its accessibility, leading to its growth as a holiday resort and industrial center. Marketed as “The Pride of the Vaal,” Parys attracted city dwellers to its lush riverbanks and swimming facilities. Although many of the original buildings no longer exist, the Parys Palm Court Hotel, the museum (formerly the magistrate’s office), and the “Moedergemeente” Church remain as historical landmarks.

Parys is the ideal escape for those looking to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Located just a short drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, it offers a peaceful retreat with a slower pace of life. The town’s charming streets, lined with quaint shops and cafes, invite visitors to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures. Whether you’re looking for a quiet weekend away or a longer stay to recharge and rejuvenate, Parys provides the perfect setting.
The culture of Parys is a vibrant tapestry of art, music, and community spirit. The town is home to a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries, craft shops, and markets showcasing the work of local artists and artisans. Parys’ cultural calendar is filled with events and festivals that celebrate its unique heritage and creativity. The local community is warm and welcoming, always ready to share their love for their town with visitors.

Parys boasts a diverse array of local businesses that cater to both residents and tourists. From boutique shops and artisanal bakeries to cozy cafes and fine dining restaurants, there’s something for everyone. The town is also a popular stop for bikers, with thousands passing through each year on their scenic rides. The biker-friendly atmosphere adds an exciting and dynamic element to the town, with many businesses offering special amenities and services for motorcyclists.
